By a long, long way, this was Obama’s best debate performance. He seemed presidential. He wasn’t pushed into a corner or thrown off his game.
Bottom line - the debate was Hillary’s last chance to reframe the debate on a national stage before Super Tuesday with earned media, to reverse the surge towards Obama. Rasmussen polls in a lot of Feb 5 states see Obama pulling even with Clinton - even in California, where the tracking sees them 3 points apart. Gallup has similar results in nationwide numbers.
Hillary needed something to stop the bleeding. Instead she spent 8 minutes refusing to answer whether her vote to authorise the invasion of Iraq was a mistake. Plugging an hour of infomercial on Lifetime wasn’t exactly a soaring call to arms or a transcendant game-changer.
