Bertie Ahern tells Aengus Fanning in this morning’s Sunday Independent:
“The reality of the situation is that 100 years ago it was Parnell, 10 years ago it was Clinton, today it’s me and tomorrow it will be somebody else.”
Wow.
I’ve argued for several weeks - privately, sadly - that just this line of thinking, explicitly rooted in Parnell, has been the main reason that Bertie has been able to cling to office. The idea that a great man is hounded from office by pygmies unfairly using his peculiar private life to undermine his public authority.
In the past few days it’s a comparison made directly by Eoghan Harris, hours after Bertie’s announcement.
Makes me wonder. Is this Parnellite meme really so prevalent in the zeitgeist that Bertie and Eoghan Harris reached for it independently? Or could it be that Harris has been Bertie’s secret speechwriter for last Tuesday’s solliloquy and today’s “interview” with the Sindo?
