Will it ‘Viral’?

Well there’s execution - seeding the blogosphere. But if after a bit of seeding you’re not getting results, you know your content is the problem. People will call out mediocre bullshit with the slightest provocation.

Cue how it’s supposed to work:

Do viral videos actually sell product? Yes if you’re Weezer, whose video of their new single, Pork and Beans, has been viewed more than 10 million times (counting all the versions online), including nearly nine million views on the band’s official YouTube channel. Those downloads translated to Billboard Top 100 charts within weeks.

What made the video go viral? Virals! The video is a collection of Internet memes from Numa Numa to Chocolate Rain, Evolution of Dance, Blendtec, Miss Teen South Carolina Answers a Question, and The Diet Coke and Mentos Experiments.

It’s a marketing coup for the quirky band, and should also be a wake-up call for all the agency types who are endlessly scratching their heads (and other body parts) about metrics.

I think the interesting thing I’ve observed from some viral attempts thus far is that Irish agencies seem to think going viral means simply contacting Irish bloggers. If you look at a lot of the vids embedded on Irish blogs from ad/PR agencies but click through to the page on YouTube, they don’t seem to be getting many views.

Plus while content will inevitably be the problem, look at all the examples of great content that are given - a handful in comparison to the thousands of clips that are probably produced

And while I’m at it :D (Should really have combined these into one comment instead of pressing the button while in mid thought) With all the changes in the communications landscape, agencies in any discipline are now under more pressure then ever to create content that stands out and grabs the attention of the intended audience, whether that content ends up on YouTube, the Irish Times or in your inbox. So many messages to choose from…
