But I always thought that when an American looks at the mansion on the hill he doesn’t say “I’m going to burn that bastard out”, but rather “someday I’m going to own a house like that”.
So McCain invested in real estate. If I understand correctly everybody was investing in real estate - even NINJAs - up until about a year ago. I’ve been pulling hard for Obama, but I am so not moved by the politics of envy. McCain’s rich, I’m not. So what?
Nothing wrong with being rich, or enjoying the fruits of one’s labour as some might say. Being born into wealth or privilege or plain marrying it isn’t something to crow about.
Especially when it comes from those who call someone who did his school work, studied hard and went to college just like people told him he should try to, a member of the elite. What is really meant is some of us should know our place and not challenge their betters who were born to power and to rule.
Huh? He wasn’t crowing; he was asked how many houses he owned. Anyway, Obama’s ad isn’t an answer to the elite charge; it’s an attack on McCain’s real estate holdings. As far as I know, you’re still allowed to own property in a republic, whether you were born rich or not.
Jon, in fairness, I think you’re deliberately missing the point here. This ad wasn’t an attack on McCain’s real estate holdings. It raised the fact that a 72 year old man can’t REMEMBER how many houses he owns. Now that he’s picked Miss Alaska (alternate), all issues relating to McCain’s age are legit targets.
