The Republican Reality

September 3rd, 2008 · 1 Comment

Open Mic Night for the grownups remaining (for the moment) inside what used to be called the Republican Party:

Peggy Noonan & Mike Murphy are the sane remnants of the party I grew up with. At least when they think the microphones are off, they seem to be living in the same universe as the rest of us (well, except for JC Skinner).

What universe do you think I’m in, Richard?
I promise you, it’s the same one you’re familiar with - the one where US FDI to Ireland outscores FDI into India and China combined yet Obama wants to pull jobs back to the homeland; the one where the peace process in NI is on the brink again yet Obama wants to pull the US envoy; the one where the Dems should have wrapped up the election months ago given the appalling performance of Bush in the Whitehouse, yet decided to run a rookie, had a nine-month internecine blood-letting of a race for the candidacy, and now find themselves facing a canny, experienced, centrist war hero who has been carefully copying all of Hilary’s notes on the many weak spots of Obama’s candidacy.
Personally speaking, I think another Republican victory would be bad for US democracy and probably not very good for global geo-politics.
But I feel it is preferable to putting up a protectionist, hyper-liberal rookie with zero experience outside of ‘community leadership’ (on which the files have conveniently just been classified to prevent journos from scrutinising what Obama ever has actually done) against a belligerent Russia holding all the energy cards and a resurgent China who hold all the economic ones.
But that’s US elections for ya - it’s never a pretty choice.
I’m just staggered that a man of your intelligence has fallen so conclusively for the Obama spin without thinking to scrutinise either what it’s actually built upon (no experience, hidden work records, possible passport malfunction) or what it is currently built on (some of the most organised and odious smear attempts I’ve ever encountered in any election, from the cheerleading Obamaniacs of the Daily Kos.)
