Revised Reactions

I Tivo’d the debate, which was good because I woke up late. Now I’m reviewing the first part, so I can get something towards why Sullivan describes this as a “mauling” of McCain. Certainly I’ve never seen dial groups pinned to the ceiling for as long as Obama had the women watching at the top of the range - and McCain, as I said, looked addled others called him ‘erratic‘. The clips coming out now seem to make that case pretty powerfully.

Obama certainly did get off - perhaps - the line of the night in demanding that CEOs of bailed-out banks/insurance get fired and we get our money back.

McCain’s lines were good - if you’re an anorak who remembers Reagan and Tip O’Neill sitting down to (temporarily) save social security like it was yesterday.

But given the lack of any new, big, breakthrough moments - the post debate commentary will focus on temperament.

UPDATE: CNN instapoll - Obama crushes McCain, with an oversample of Repubs in the survey. Who won? Obama 54-30. Obama’s fave/unfave gets a net +8 McCain’s stay the same.

The “that one” moment, the refusal to shake hands, McCain left the hall early. All the emotional resonances coming from this debate work against McCain.
