The McCain that Didn’t Bark

October 8th, 2008 · 1 Comment

The McCain campaign spent the last three days telegraphing that they needed to change the subject from the economy to culture war issues - Ayers, Wright, “terrorist“, “treason”, “kill him“.

But nothing from McCain to push it in that direction tonight (a fact that is turning the dead-ender right in knots). Why?

Did McCain wake up on Tuesday and have a moment of clarity through the senile dementia, remembering the man he used to [seem to] be? Did they figure out that Ayers attacks are not polling well - that the Keating counterpunch is too lethal?

Or have they just given up?

Story of the night.

Second story: Is Sarah Palin just totally freelancing now?

There will come a point in the remaining few weeks when the republican party decides that if it is going to lose then it will lose the right way in order that it can rebound in ‘12. Otherwise it will make the road back that bit too difficult for anyone to challenge the incumbent even if the economy doesn’t perform brilliantly over the next four years. Like in judo in elections you have to know how to fall properly in order to be able to regroup without leaving too many hostages to fortune. This is what FG failed to do in 2002.

Did you notice last night how trenchant McCain was about nuclear power? I mean I know series 7 of the West Wing has become some sort of play book for this election but if there is even the merest hint of a problem at a plant between now and election day, the writers are going to be anointed as Oracles.
